16.06 Grammar
These action words can all be followed by the word “le” to say “the”
(ave le, aumai le, tu’u le–take the, bring the, leave the)
When using “tago” however you follow it with “I le” so it would be “tago I le” –“grab the”
To show where to do the action use “I le” and ” I totonu o le”, or I lalo o le”, etc. as discussed in lesson 5 and 15
Use “ia” instead of “I le” when referring to a person by name or when using one of the pronouns-(a’u, oe, ia, oulua, outou, maua, matou, laua, latou, taua, tatou
ex. “Ave le fagu I le potu” and “Ave le fagu ia Nathan” and “Ave le fagu ia latou”
“Take the bottle to the room”, “Take the bottle to Nathan”, “Take the bottle to them”
If you want to say “Take the bottle to mommy” you would say “Ave le fagu ia mama” but if you want to say “Take the bottle to your mom” you would say “Ave le fagu I lou tina”
The first example uses “ia” because “mommy” is being used as the name of a person would be used.
In the second example “I le” is replaced with “I lou” because you are saying “to your mom” rather than “to the mom”
If you wanted to say “Take the bottle to the mom” you would say “Ave le fagu I le tina” –If you added “o Janice” at the end it would say “Take the bottle to Janice’s mom”–“Ave le fagu I le tina o Janice”
If you wanted to say “Take the bottle to the” girl or man or woman, etc..you would use “I le” because you are referring to a person but not by name or pronoun
If you wanted to say “Take the bottle to that girl (over there away from us both) you would say “Ave le fagu I le teine lela”
“Ave” means take or give. If you wanted to say “give me” however you would use “aumai” because “ave” is in the direction away from the speaker.
